Enveloping baby in safety with one fell swoop, Larina is a feminine name that means "protection." It stems from the mythical Roman Lares—guardian entities believed to observe and defend their charged abodes. Considered a form of household gods, these demure little deities were often depicted as statues that families would place within shared domestic spaces. So central were Lares to daily life that ancient Roman authors translated them as "heroes" over their original meaning "lord" from the Etruscan lars.
