Nikolai is a mighty east Slavic boy’s name that means “people of victory.” Perhaps, appropriately, it is the name of numerous iconic Russian leaders and remains particularly popular in Russia. Its Greek equivalent, Nicholas, is fashionable throughout the English-speaking world. In Greece, Nicholas and its variants are often given to baby boys born in maritime regions, as St. Nicholas is the patron saint of seafarers.
