While many associate Louisiana with the southern state, this feminine name is actually rooted in French King Louis XIV. A variation of the monarch's name, Louisiana stems from an Old Frankish name Hlōdowik, meaning "renowned warrior." Its components are the German elements hlūdaz, "famous," and wiganą, "to fight," endowing Louisiana with quite the formidable foundations.
