As the Roman Empire rose from a small village to a world power that some say would’ve spanned a whopping 50 countries today, so did the many ancient Roman names that came with it.
If there’s anything the Romans were known for, it’s storytelling. And the great thing about Roman baby names is that there’s a tale of power and glory behind each and every single one of them. Highlighting ancient folk traditions, mythology and the genius of a once-revered people, these names might even inspire baby to make some of their own monumental discoveries. Derived from dozens of languages, including Latin, Greek, Etruscan and even Celtic, the diversity of Roman baby names serves as an awesome reminder of just how many cultures this massive empire encompassed in its golden years—and just how much your kiddo can learn about the world around them from the origins of their very own name.
All that said, times have changed, and the Roman Empire looks a little different from the history books. In fact, most of what still exists is found in its iconic capital, Rome, where timeless marble structures, stunning piazzas, cobblestone streets and amazing gelato (yes, it’s that good!) welcome visitors with a friendly “ciao!” But its legacy lives on through the many Romanesque names it inspired, and we can’t wait for you to explore what we’ve got in store for that little legend of yours.

More About Roman Naming Culture
Ever wondered what baby naming was like for the Romans? Believe it or not, they had a fascinating system that looked a lot like how we name new babies today. This was known as the tria nomina, where a child—depending on their gender or social status—was given three names. First in the trio was the praenomen or first name, as we’d call it—and this was usually chosen by parents and given to boys shortly after birth. After the praenomen, came the nomen, which indicated what family, clan or gens someone belonged to. Many Romans from aristocratic families also had a cognomen or a third name, and—just like a nickname you’d give to your newest addition—this was often inspired by a unique personal trait. A little food for thought if you’re on the lookout for some authentic Roman baby-name inspiration!
