Kelby

Kelby is a gender-neutral name, long considered an iteration of the Norse Shelby. Bearing strong Viking roots, Kelby is inspired by the ancient settlement Selby on the banks of the River Ouse. Established by the Vikings who landed there in the 8th century, the name derives from the Old Norse elements selja, "willow," and býr, "farm." Such connections bestow Kelby with the elegance and might of the mythical willow tree. Of course, Kelby also bears a close resemblance to the place name Kilby, imbuing the title with an Anglo-Saxon heritage. In this interpretation, Kelby finds renewed meaning as "the child's settlement" from the blending of the Old English cilda and the Norse element býr.
