Why is the Cancer sign represented by a crab?
Though the zodiac signs and their representations have taken on new meanings of their own over the years, they originally came from stories made for constellations. The crab as the emblem for Cancers—while it does make sense for the personality traits associated with the sign—came from, supposedly, Hera’s pure spite. In Hercules’, or Heracles’, famous trials, he fought the Lernaean hydra. Amidst the fight against the hydra, he was pinched by a crab and subsequently crushed. Hera then rewarded the crab by commemorating it in the heavens.
