Alfalfa

Alfalfa is an unusually lyrical name for boys. With some ties to the melodious Spanish language, Alfalfa originally comes from the Arabic word al-fasfasa to refer to the flowering plant that’s been cultivated and used as livestock fodder since at least the era of the ancient Greeks and Romans. However, as a moniker, there was none more successful in lending it star power than child actor Carl Dean Switzer, who essayed a namesake character in a short series, Our Gangs. And by the end of 1937, Switzer’s “Alfalfa” surpassed the popularity of even the series’ chosen star.
